Mackinnon-Sclater road : ウィキペディア英語版
Mackinnon-Sclater road
The Mackinnon-Sclater road was a 600mile/1000 km ox cart track from Mombasa to Busia in Kenya started in 1890 by the British East Africa Company (IBEAC).〔An Economic History of Kenya, edited by WR Ochieng' and RM Maxon, p131〕〔Road-Making and Surveying in British East Africa, p269, by G. E. Smith, 1899, The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers).〕 It superseded earlier caravan routes used by slave traders and explorers of the interior.〔Official touring guide to East Africa by Automobile Association of East Africa, Henry J. Reuter, 1973〕
The part of the road called the "Mackinnon road" linked Mombasa and Kibwezi. It was built by an Australian called George Wilson.〔1995:AN INFORMAL HISTORY OF MOTORING IN KENYA by Gavin Bennett accessed from http://www.vccck.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=50:history-of-motoring-in-kenya&catid=41:kenyan-motoring-history&Itemid=68, on 17-Dec-2009〕 It was named after and partly financed by Sir William Mackinnon, 1st Baronet a founder of the IBEAC who wanted to increase trade with Uganda.〔Hansard 28 February 1896, Commons Sitting, CIVIL SERVICES AND REVENUE DEPARTMENTS (SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES), 1895–6. accessed from http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1896/feb/28/class-v, 17-Dec-2009〕 The road was “of the simplest kind, unmetalled, and in fact, the roughest track along which a bullock-cart would go” 〔Smith, R. E. (1899). "Road-Making and Surveying in British East Africa." The Geographical Journal 14(3): 269.〕
Captain Bertram Lutley Sclater of the Royal Engineers continued the road from Kibwezi to the Uganda border at Busia.〔An Economic History of Kenya, edited by WR Ochieng' and RM Maxon, p131〕〔Permanent way, Volume 2, 1950, by Mervyn F. Hill〕
The road as a means of long distance travel fell into disuse between 1896 and 1901 after the Uganda Railway overtook it. Many of the cars later used in the interior were transported there by rail because the road journey was long, slow and difficult.〔1995:AN INFORMAL HISTORY OF MOTORING IN KENYA by Gavin Bennett accessed from http://www.oocities.org/motorcity/flats/2014/motoringkenya.html, on 30-Dec-2013〕
